Women Victims of Cossack Outrage One Old Man, Who Tries to Save Daughter From Her Assailants, Is Crucified
Special Dispatch to "The Chronicle."
New York, December 3.- A new story of war atrocity was brought from Galicia today by Mrs. Joseph M. Lacks, whose husband is a merchant in San Francisco. She arrived on the Italian liner Regina d'Italia.
"I was visiting in Ropczyce, a town not far from Lemburg," she said. "On October 10th word was circulated that the Russians were coming, and that all women would better leave before their arrival. Many women went, but many others, myself among them, did not believe the stories of shameful treatment of women by Cossacks and remained in our homes. The Russians entered
the town October 15th.
Awful Orgy in Church *They seemed well enough behaved and seemed to justify our confidence that stories about them were all untrue. So far bad
timidity disappeared among the people that everybody went to church on Sunday as though there were no Russians in town.
**But
soon after the services began Cossacks appeared at the doors of the churches, interrupted the services and ordered all men, including priests, and all children to leave. The doors were guarded and no women were allowed to get out. Then the doors were locked, and there was a more awful orgy than I believed this world could know.
"Those outside could hear the women screaming, and the howls and laughter of the Cossacks.
Old Man is Crucifield
"One old man who had left his daughter, found the door in the church which was unlocked, and tried to fight his way to her. The Cossacks caught him, crucified him on one of the pillars, and as he screamed in agony, went on with their orgy.
"By the grace of heaven I did not go to the church. I ran away from the town as soon as I knew what was going on, and made my way to Italy."
How to Live Long New York, December 14. Moses Wohl of the Bronx today began his 101st year of life, with this recipe for reaching further milestones:
Drink beer and ale every day, some- times a little wine: smoke at least seven
cigars each day; take a good long walk with- out a cane; read all the newspapers and don't
worry.
Wohl, who was seen surrounded by four sons and his daughter, fifteen grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren, said he regretted he was a little too old to learn to tango.

Want Irish Republic
A curious commentary and interesting sidelight is shown in the recent opposition to John Redmond at contested parliamentary elections in Ireland at present.
Sir Roger Casement. Professor McNeill and fully ninety per cent of those opposing Redmond are Irish Protestants.
This party
is seeking to have an Irish Republic or at least a measure of Home Rule given to Ire- land as enjoyed by Canada. Australia. or South Africa. To gain their ends, Sir Roger Casement went to Berlin a few weeks ago and presumably made things right there. Sir Roger's party are dead against all recruit- ing in Ireland until their demands are granted. He has a large following in the Volunteers, particularly in Dublin, Cork and the other principal cities. What a complete answer this is to the old cry of the Orangemen of religious intolerance by their own country- men, for which the British Government were ready to give all Ulster to the Orange party.
Of course. anyone who knows Ireland and Irish History, knows that many of her greatest leaders and best loved sons were of the Protestant Faith. for instance Wolfe Tone, Emmet. Lord Edward Fitzgerald, Mitchell, Smith O'Brien, Parnell. All ven- crated and idolized in Ireland to-day and all Protestants.
God prosper Casement.
